With so much to do and see in Singapore, any first-time visitor (or repeat traveller) to this beautiful city will need somewhere central to stay to maximise their time. The JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach is not only in an ideal location, it is also one of the best city hotels you’ll ever have the pleasure of staying at.
First impressions are everything and when you pull up to their roundabout entrance with a gushing fountain, your anticipation level for this designer hotel instantly rises. An interactive floor-to-ceiling hypnotic art feature at the entrance emphasises the artful balance this JW Marriott hotel has created between historic heritage and contemporary style. Statues and paintings are situated in and around the hotel, including elevators decorated with innovative RGB designs that changes with the hue cast.
We gushed over our beautiful Deluxe Room with its massive windows that allowed the morning light to seep in and let us wake to the impressive view of Marina Bay. The rooms were clean and extremely modern with the sleek marble bathrooms containing a ‘smart’ sensor toilet along with a comfortable bath perfect for soaking in.
The view from our room was lovely but when we wanted an even better look we headed up to the 18th floor. On that level there is a spectacular 360-degree view of Singapore’s skyline along with a 24-hour gym, Flow 18 bar, and a memorable infinity pool. The JW Marriot Hotel Singapore South Beach have set up a single table in a section of their pool where you can sip drinks from the poolside bar while watching the sun set behind Singapore’s skyscrapers. Make sure to go up after dusk to see the city skyline at night.
It’s the perfect thing to do to begin a full evening of memorable experiences at the JW Marriott, starting with a show.
The show we refer to is the weekend mermaid show at Fish Pool. That’s right. We said mermaid show. Make a reservation because this is one of Singapore’s hidden gems and should not to be missed. Mermaids mesmerise and delight as they gracefully move underwater while you admire with a glass of champagne. We’d never seen anything quite like it and found it hard to pull ourselves away from the spectacle of these flirtatious mermaids. This unique experience starts at 7pm and there’s limited seating within the glamourous Champagne, Caviar & Oyster Bar and only a few tables are directly in front of the ‘mermaid tank’, so make your reservation for 6:30pm to ensure a good seat.
Pre-dinner drinks at the Fish Pool in the company of mermaids should then be swiftly followed by a meal upstairs at the sophisticated Cantonese restaurant, Madame Fan. A DJ is positioned up on a platform to ensure an elegant and lively ambience is present within the restaurant that is capable of hosting couples or large groups.
It felt like we ate for half a dozen rather than just two as we couldn’t help ourselves through a divine four-course meal. Every dish was delectable and presented with finesse, with a particular highlight for both of us being a Cantonese speciality, the Crispy Aromatic Duck.
To finish our night, we then just went down a set of stairs to take our (reserved!) spot in, Cool Cats, the JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach’s very own speakeasy live music club. Premium Champagne, crafted cocktails, or sophisticated G&T’s are all available in this packed and lively lounge while you listen to soulful performances. This was such a wonderful way to cap off our night, and what made it even better, was that when we finally had as much of a swingin’ good time that we possibly could, we only had to walk across the courtyard to our hotel.
This 5-star city hotel in Singapore is so big that it practically consumes an entire block, with several external buildings belonging to the hotel positioned around the main building. This includes their iconic Grand Ballroom that has a stunning Forest of Lights installation that can be any colour to adapt to the occasion.
Other restaurants and cafes occupy some of these spaces, all of which are covered by a stylish roof that has architecturally been designed to shield you from the rain while watering all of the plants beneath the covering.
This JW Marriott property is also connected to the MRT station, Esplanade, allowing you easy access using the Circular Line to all of the other MRT lines. This makes it so simple to get to all of the things to do in Singapore such as Gardens by the Bay and Little India, however, if you’re looking to shop, you don’t need to head to Orchard Road. Just opposite the JW Marriott is the humongous shopping centre, Suntec City, which really is like a city in its own right! It has to be walked and gotten lost in to believe.
Because access to Singapore’s big retail brands are all practically at your doorstep, there’s little reason for you not to want to shop until you drop. If you need to recharge your batteries for a second wind, you can get a 25-minute express treatment at Spa by JW. I was given a traditional Cantonese suction treatment, which was unlike anything I’ve had before. I was asked beforehand if I exercise – I said yes, thinking that my one or two trips to the gym warranted a firm yes, however, I might have been flattering to deceive myself as the suction went right through what little muscle I had to pull my inner flab around.
Feeling a little shocked but rejuvenated, we headed over to the Executive Lounge via link bridge for some TLC. Without question, you should make sure your stay at the JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach includes privileged access to their Executive Lounge.
Complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea, hors d’oeuvres, and evening cocktails are all included as part of your stay and the choice of food is genuinely superb. The afternoon tea even includes freshly baked scones.
The breakfast at Beach Road Kitchen was excellent and jam packed full of variety (including an ice cream machine!), however, we preferred the buffet breakfast at the Executive Lounge. There’s a little less choice but it has more than just the essentials and what you gain is a more peaceful environment befitting of the sophisticated hotel. We spent a lot of our free time at the Executive Lounge working and being completely at ease.
The JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach felt like a six-star city hotel because everything just felt so easy while we were there. If we wanted to go somewhere and explore, it was simple to do so. When we wanted to relax we were able to do so to such a degree that we never wanted to leave. This is one of the best city hotels we’ve ever been to and when you’re debating where to stay in Singapore, this is one hotel you simply must consider.
